A prominent academic and global executive, Dr. Christopher J. Metzler became President/CEO and Chief Innovator of HFW in 2015. HFW is a global health care consultancy based in West Palm Beach Florida. He is among the world’s leading experts on cultural competency, health care disparities, international law and organization development. He has developed and tested models for cultural competency through the use of effective diversity strategies. He serves as a thought leader for AARP on issues of Wellness, Aging in Place, The New Life Stage and reimagining one’s life.
During his career, he has pioneered the development of innovative organization strategies in the private and public sectors which evolved into mainstream offerings that simultaneously delivered meaningful value to customers and bottom-line business results. He is also an expert on The Affordable Health Care Act and its legal and practical implications for business and industry. He leads the firm’s Disparities and Cultural Competency practice as well as its Reducing Hospital Readmissions vector.
Before joining HFW, Metzler was on the faculty at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. where he taught several courses including Multi-National Business policy and Geo-politics, Cultural Proficiency and Competency and Organizational Development.
He was also Senior Associate Dean for Applied Management at Georgetown where he directed the largest graduate program in practical degrees at the University. This included Real Estate, Human Resources, Urban and Regional Planning, Hospitality Management, Systems Engineering, Technology Management, Emergency and Disaster Response, and Sports Industry Management.
Prior to Georgetown, he served on the faculty at Cornell University’s ILR School where he conducted extensive research on Health Care Disparities, Cultural Competency and Cultural Proficiency in the delivery of health care.
He has also developed, designed and delivered certificate programs in Cultural Competency for the AAMC, The NIH and other health care organizations. He is the author of the widely quoted “Competencies of the Chief Diversity Officer.” He is also a TV Analyst and Commentator appearing on CNN, Fox News and NBC. He is a contributor to Diversity Executive Magazine where he writes a bi-monthly column and the author of the book, “The Construction and Rearticulation of Race in a ‘post racial’ America.
Prior to Cornell he was Senior Vice-President of Strategic Research and Consulting for a global consulting firm where he was responsible for developing the company’s strategy to identify and prioritize opportunities for long-term growth. In addition, he is credited with driving enterprise-wide adoption of its cultural competency, diversity and reducing health care disparities models, which subsequently became the company’s fastest growing product. He also created and led the Innovation Incubator that conceptualized and developed modeling for future realities of the health care business.
He also ran a P&L, at the company where he consistently exceeded revenue and innovation targets.
He has advised the NIH, hospital systems and Associations including: The American Association Of Medical Colleges, The American Dental Association, The Mofitt Cancer Center, Kentucky One, and Spectrum Health Systems. He has also delivered speeches to The AHEC, The Institute for Diversity in Health Care Management, NAAME and others.
Metzler holds a PhD in Law from The University of Aberdeen, a Law Degree from The University of Oxford in Oxford, England and a Master of Human Rights from Columbia University in New York City.
